Mázsa  (2012)

Mázsa means 100kg in Hungarian. It refers to a rural saying, which states, that a real man starts at that weight.

This series was made over two years in my mothers hometown of Tolna, in southern Hungary. It documents the social life of a specific group of young people in this particular smalltown, but it also reveals something about growing up in Hungary, specifically in the countryside. Calm, almost frozen settings are contrasted with lavish social scenes, showing the importance of human interaction and youthful recklessness in such a desolate place.
