Pictures of a Manliness  (2014)

Violence is part of the traditional image of manliness. Initially it was a biological necessity in the natural fight for survival, later it became a culturally cultivated virtue during the many wars of our history. Today we despise all forms of actual violence, while still celebrating it in popular culture.

This series does not choose sides on the topic, but shows the connections between manliness and violence, through staged and found scenes. The stagings often references visual concepts as seen in movies and on television, while the documentary images show a form of manly self-staging, which also stands in direct or indirect connection to violence.

The main conflict is the one between the obvious problem with real violence and a culture, that is obsessed with violent imagery.
